The colorful, iconic graffiti boat at Folly Beach is set to receive a fresh coat of paint in an exciting collaboration between Charleston Creative Current and the Charleston Surfrider Foundation. The project aims to inspire ocean advocacy and rally the community to protect local beaches, with the help of local artists.
Revamping the Graffiti Boat with a Purpose
The event will kick off on July 2 at 6 p.m. with an optional litter clean-up, followed by the painting of the boat at 7 p.m. The event is part of an initiative to encourage locals and visitors to care for the environment by using art as a tool for advocacy. According to Charleston Creative Current, the goal is to “rally this community together to take care of our beaches.”
Artists will be painting the boat with a focus on the upcoming beach cleanup event organized by the Surfrider Foundation, which traditionally takes place the day after Independence Day. July 5 is known for being one of the dirtiest beach days of the year, and the boat’s new design will help spread the word about the cleanup effort.
Creativity with a Purpose
The artists will be given a general theme to inspire their designs, creating a space for the Charleston creative community to come together and contribute to an important cause. According to Sophia Perlee, co-founder of Creative Currents, this event is designed to “create a safe and intentional space for Charleston creatives to connect, create, and be challenged artistically.”
The organizers are committed to making this event environmentally friendly. Water-based, non-toxic spray paints will be provided for the artwork, which will reduce harmful chemical emissions. Julia Plasynski, Vice Chair of the Surfrider Foundation, emphasized the benefits of using water-based paint: “This choice reduces the release of chemicals and compounds into the air, making it safer for both the environment and human health. While the immediate goal of our painting is to raise awareness for our upcoming litter sweep, our broader mission is to protect people and the planet!”
A Community Gathering
The graffiti boat, located at the intersection of Folly Road and Battery Island Drive, is a beloved local landmark. Now, thanks to this creative initiative, it will serve as a reminder of the community’s commitment to keeping local beaches clean and protecting the environment.
The event is open to all, and those interested in participating can sign up on the Surfrider Foundation’s website. The community is invited to come together to paint, clean, and show their support for preserving Folly Beach’s natural beauty.
This collaboration between Charleston Creative Current and the Charleston Surfrider Foundation highlights the power of art and community action in raising awareness for ocean and beach conservation. The graffiti boat’s new paint job will not only beautify the area but also serve as a lasting symbol of the community’s dedication to environmental stewardship.
