A Norfolk Southern train derailed near the KION North America plant off Highway 78 in Dorchester County, South Carolina, on Saturday, January 10, 2026, around 9:50 a.m., with no injuries reported.
Incident Details
The derailment involved 22 cars, including an empty tank car that transports chlorobenzene, a colorless, flammable liquid used as a solvent. A shelter-in-place order was issued as a precaution within a 1.5-mile radius near 2450 W 5th Street, but hazmat teams cleared the scene by 2:22 p.m., lifting the order with no threat found.
Road Closures
Highway 78 remains closed from Jedburg Road to Industrial Road, and authorities urge avoiding the area while crews clear tracks and investigate the cause, led by Norfolk Southern. Summerville Mayor Russ Touchberry noted the measures were precautionary due to a monitored leak, but no immediate danger existed.
