North Charleston, S.C. — Kelvin McArthur Johnson, 56, is facing one charge of second-degree burglary and is likely to face additional charges following a pursuit by North Charleston Police on Monday night.

The Pursuit

According to a North Charleston Police incident report, officers spotted Johnson, who had an active burglary warrant, near North Charleston City Hall at approximately 6:13 p.m. on Monday, June 28. After confirming the license plate of the vehicle Johnson was driving, officers attempted a traffic stop.

Initially, Johnson pulled into a hotel parking lot and stopped the vehicle. However, when officers exited their vehicle, Johnson put the car back in drive and fled the scene. The police then initiated a pursuit as Johnson led them down Northwoods Boulevard, driving at a high rate of speed.

The Chase

Johnson continued driving toward Ashley Phosphate Road, where he made a sharp turn onto Ashley Phosphate Road and then took the offramp from the 52 Connector into oncoming traffic. At this point, officers ended the pursuit for safety reasons.

Arrest and Further Charges

Police spokesman Harve Jacobs confirmed that Johnson was arrested Tuesday afternoon. In addition to the second-degree burglary charge, police expect to file a charge of failure to stop for blue lights and siren as a result of the pursuit.

Johnson was taken into custody and is currently being held in Charleston County Jail.
