The Charleston chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is offering a free brake light clinic this Sunday, July 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The clinic, hosted outside Fish Net Seafood on Johns Island, is aimed at helping locals replace broken brake lights and turn signals to avoid unnecessary encounters with law enforcement.
Community Support, Not Charity
Charleston DSA emphasizes that the event is about “solidarity, not charity.” The group’s goal is to help residents reduce interactions with police, particularly those stemming from minor issues like malfunctioning brake lights, which can often lead to traffic stops, searches, and detentions.
A Longstanding Initiative
This event is part of a larger effort by Charleston DSA, which has previously hosted similar brake light clinics across the Charleston metro area. These clinics provide a simple, free service to ensure that drivers have functioning lights, helping them avoid the stress and hassle of traffic stops.
By offering this service, the group hopes to address one of the most common reasons for “frivolous” encounters with law enforcement, making streets safer for everyone.
