A battery may have started the Creek Side Way house fire

Charleston, SC – A battery malfunction caused a house fire Friday night on Creek Side Way, Charleston Fire Department officials reported.

Firefighters responded to a 911 call around 9 p.m., finding light smoke inside the three-story home. The residents had returned home to find the house filled with smoke and discovered heavier smoke and flames near the garage.

“The owner utilized several pots full of water and a fire extinguisher to control the fire before firefighters arrived,” CFD said.

Investigators determined the fire likely started near a lithium-ion rechargeable battery that had failed to charge. The resident had been planning to recycle the battery.

No injuries were reported.
