South Carolina police say a driver was killed after a truck ran off the freeway during a crash

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said that one individual was killed in an accident on Tuesday night.

Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway said that the single-vehicle crash occurred around 8:45 p.m. in Laurens County.

Ridgeway reported seeing a 1996 Chevrolet pickup vehicle going south on Interstate 385. At the 21-mile point, the Chevy drove off the left side of the highway, overcorrected, and drifted back across I-385 before crashing into a tree, according to Ridgeway.

Ridgeway said that the Chevy driver died at the site.

The Laurens County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Chevy driver.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no information on whether the driver was wearing a seat belt.

The cause of the Chevy’s deviation off I-385 was unknown, but the Highway Patrol is still investigating the collision.

According to the state Department of Public Safety, 626 people have died on South Carolina roadways as of Sunday in 2025. According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, at least 948 persons were killed in collisions last year.

DPS data show that at least 15 individuals died in Laurens County collisions in 2025. DPS reported 15 deaths in the county in 2024.
