The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office hosted its “Shop with the Sheriff” event on Friday, December 19, 2025, treating 20 selected children and their families to holiday shopping and meals.
Event Highlights
Twenty kids, chosen by school guidance counselors and resource officers, enjoyed a free lunch at Chick-fil-A with deputies before a police-escorted trip to Walmart. Each child shopped up to $150 worth of toys like footballs, dinosaurs, and Nerf guns from their wish lists. The event fostered smiles and positive interactions, funded partly by local Walmart stores.
Sheriff’s Perspective
Sheriff Carl Ritchie emphasized building trust with youth through such community engagements, preferring to see kids in joyful settings rather than facing legal issues. He noted these events help reduce fear of law enforcement and promote partnership. Deputies highlighted their role as community supporters during special occasions.
Family and Community Impact
Parent Shawn Coston, whose 10-year-old son from James Island Elementary participated, praised the respect shown and its role in earning trust. He advocated for ongoing events to strengthen community ties. Walmart manager Chenedria Watley called it “pure awesomeness,” celebrating support for local families.
