The LENS Foundation of IOP will offer a $15K grant to Sullivan's Island school

A generous donation from a local nonprofit is making waves in the Lowcountry, as the Law Enforcement Neighborhood Support (LENS) Foundation Isle of Palms has awarded its largest grant to date — a $15,000 gift — to Sullivan’s Island Elementary School.

LENS Foundation Donates $15,000 to Support Sullivan’s Island Elementary

On Monday, the LENS Foundation announced its landmark $15,000 donation to support the school’s fundraising efforts, including an exciting project: the creation of a new aquarium to enhance hands-on learning experiences for students.

Foundation leaders say the grant reflects their long-standing commitment to education, safety, and community engagement — values that Sullivan’s Island Elementary has championed through both curriculum and outreach.

“This donation is truly an investment in the future of our community,” said Ted Kinghorn, Director of the LENS Foundation Isle of Palms. “Sullivan’s Island Elementary embodies our mission by preparing students not only academically, but as responsible young citizens.”

A Partnership Built on Community Engagement

Sullivan’s Island Elementary School has become an important community hub through its involvement with LENS-supported programs like:

The Boating and Water Safety Program

The Annual Bicycle Rodeo

These events aim to promote child safety, responsibility, and good citizenship, while connecting students and families to local law enforcement and first responders in positive, educational ways.

“As a community representative on the School Improvement Committee for the past three years, I’ve seen firsthand the school’s dedication,” Kinghorn added. “Our board knew this was the right choice.”

Enhancing Education with New Learning Tools

Principal Susan King expressed gratitude on behalf of the school, saying the donation will directly benefit students and expand educational opportunities — particularly through the planned aquarium installation.

“The support of local organizations like LENS helps us create opportunities for our children to thrive,” said King.

Aquariums in schools are more than just decorative — they provide students with immersive, hands-on lessons in biology, ecosystems, and marine science, which is especially fitting for a school located near South Carolina’s coast.

LENS Foundation: A Pillar of Community Support

The LENS Foundation Isle of Palms serves as a community support system for both the Isle of Palms Police and Fire Departments, while also offering funding and assistance for programs that promote public safety, education, and community engagement.

Whether it’s equipping first responders, funding school initiatives, or hosting events that bring residents together, LENS continues to be a unifying force in the Charleston County area.

With this $15,000 donation, the LENS Foundation Isle of Palms is investing in more than just equipment or classroom tools — it’s investing in the future of local students, their education, and their role as responsible citizens in the community. Sullivan’s Island Elementary, known for its strong academic programs and community involvement, now has even more support to continue creating impactful, hands-on learning experiences that reflect the unique coastal environment of the Lowcountry.
