BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – An annual Francis Marion Memorial Service on Friday will feature a special flyover by the South Carolina Air National Guard.

Event Details

The event, hosted by Berkeley 250 and the South Carolina American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission, will welcome historians, descendants, and community leaders as organizers mark the anniversary of the Revolutionary War general’s death in 1795.

Flyover to Honor Francis Marion

A flyover by the South Carolina Air National Guard will highlight this year’s observance, adding a modern military tribute to the annual wreath-laying tradition, which is held each year at Belle Isle Plantation Cemetery.

Organizers said the flyover underscores Marion’s enduring influence on South Carolina’s Revolutionary War history.

Release of Volume Three of The Francis Marion Papers

The event also marks the release of Volume Three of The Francis Marion Papers, completing a three‑volume collection of the general’s surviving correspondence. SC250 leaders said the publication represents the most comprehensive effort to gather Marion’s letters, offering rare insight into his leadership and the Southern Campaign.

Preserving South Carolina’s Revolutionary War Legacy

“As we approach the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, the SC250 Commission remains committed to preserving and honoring South Carolina’s pivotal role in securing American independence,” said Molly Fortune, CEO of SC250. “The Francis Marion Papers provide invaluable insight into Marion’s leadership and ensure these documents remain accessible to scholars, students, and the public.”

The Francis Marion Papers Project

The project began more than two decades ago when researcher David Neilan set out to locate and organize Marion’s correspondence, ultimately uncovering more than 600 documents from archives across the country.

Revived in 2022 under the leadership of the late Charles Baxley and SC250, the series was brought to publication by editors Rick Wise and Ben Rubin.

Event Time and Location

Friday’s event will take place from 11 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. at 1 General Francis Marion Avenue, Pineville.
