The South Carolina Aquarium in Charleston is treating a cold-stunned sea turtle named “Ketchup,” found on Hilton Head Island with critically low vitals. At discovery, the turtle’s body temperature was just 45.8°F and heart rate only four beats per minute, alongside severe pneumonia and debilitation.
Treatment Details
Staff at the aquarium’s Sea Turtle Care Center are providing intensive care, including fluids and dextrose to address low glucose levels that cause rapid fatigue. The facility offers advanced interventions like antibiotics, diagnostics, surgery, and laser therapy tailored to each patient’s needs.
Current Status
Ketchup remains in critical condition but is under close monitoring at the downtown Charleston location. Supporters can contribute via the Sea Turtle Guardian program to fund ongoing treatments like antibiotics.
