Summerville, South Carolina – Police arrested a Summerville man on Thursday after he allegedly shot his wife following a dispute.
Officers rushed to the Lakes of Summerville at 3:15 p.m. Thursday after receiving reports of a shooting.
When officers arrived, they spoke with Billy Portis Jr., who informed them that he had inadvertently shot his wife while cleaning his gun, according to the Summerville Police Department.
According to the agency, the wife was rushed to the hospital after being found with a gunshot wound to the face.
The woman later informed police that she and her husband had an argument, and Portis threatened her before shooting her.
Portis is charged with high-level and aggravated domestic abuse, as well as possessing a firearm while committing a violent felony.
He is being detained at the Al Cannon Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing.
