South Carolina State University is on lockdown following a horrific incident that killed one person and badly injured another during Homecoming weekend.
According to university officials, the shootings took place late Saturday night at Hugine Suites, a student housing complex. The violence erupted mere hours after the Bulldogs’ Homecoming football game.
Woman killed; male critically injured.
According to authorities, the first victim, a young woman visiting campus, was transported to a local hospital but died as a result of her injuries. A second sufferer, a male who was also visiting, was evacuated to another hospital for further treatment. His condition has not been revealed.
Another visitor sustained injuries while fleeing the incident, but is expected to survive.
Immediate lockdown and safety response
Following the initial bullets fired, campus police imposed an emergency lockdown. Students were instructed to shelter in place, while off-campus visitors were advised to evacuate the area for safety.
University President Alexander Conyers expressed condolences on behalf of the SC State community:
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the young woman who lost her life and to all who have been affected,” according to Conyers. “We are completely collaborating with law enforcement as they look into these terrible acts of violence. Our students, employees, and guests’ safety and well-being will always be our top priority.”
South Carolina State Homecoming Events Cancelled
As a precaution, SC State canceled the Homecoming concert and all Sunday festivities that were scheduled to wrap up the weekend. The campus remains protected, with access restricted to students, personnel, and investigators while the case is ongoing.
Counseling and Support for Students
SC The State Counseling and Self-Development Center is accessible and available to pupils affected by the tragedy. University authorities urged anyone experiencing sadness or anxiety to seek treatment.
“We know this tragedy has shaken our Bulldog Family,” President Conyers stated. “We provide counseling and help to anyone in need. I beg that everyone continue to care for one another.”
Security Measures and Investigation
Officials underlined that additional security methods had been implemented throughout Homecoming Week, such as limited access points for big events, greater video monitoring, and stronger emergency communication systems. Law enforcement authorities, including the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety, and the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office, aided SC State’s Department of Public Safety in dealing with the event.
The inquiry is ongoing, and no further information regarding suspects or a motive has been provided.
