Police in North Charleston have charged a man after he reportedly intimidated an officer and attempted to kidnap a child.

North Charleston Police arrested 27-year-old Kimani Devaughntez Gandy (also reported as Kimani Gandy) on January 21, 2026, following a late-night home invasion at a Tropicana Road apartment complex. Officers responded around 11:30 p.m. to reports of a suspect breaking a window with a baby stroller while attempting to take his two-year-old daughter from the residence, where he was not allowed due to prior violence.​

Incident Details

The child’s mother stated Gandy pounded on the door, ignored warnings about the late hour and cold weather, and cut his hand during the break-in. After detention outside the apartment, Gandy allegedly kicked a patrol officer and threatened two others.​

Charges and Custody

He faces first-degree burglary and threatening the life of a public official; initial kidnapping mentions were corrected by police. Gandy was booked into Al Cannon Detention Center, amid a recent wave of Charleston-area arrests including drug busts and vehicle thefts discussed previously.​
