A Goose Creek Police Department officer was struck by a vehicle during a chain-reaction crash early Wednesday morning on Highway 52 near the twin bridges, a stretch of overpass between Goose Creek and North Charleston.
The Incident
At around 3:30 a.m., the officer had pulled over a vehicle in the northbound lane when the crash occurred. According to officials, a Charleston County Sheriff’s Office deputy was responding to the scene when a civilian vehicle collided with the deputy’s vehicle. The impact pushed the deputy’s vehicle into the Goose Creek officer’s patrol car, striking the officer, who was standing in front of his vehicle at the time.
Injuries and Hospitalization
Both the female deputy, who was inside her vehicle at the time of the crash, and the male Goose Creek officer were transported to an area hospital for treatment. Fortunately, both were treated and later released, with no major injuries reported.
Traffic Disruption
As a result of the crash, the northbound lanes of Highway 52 near the twin bridges were closed for a period of time. The South Carolina Highway Patrol responded to the scene to assist with the investigation and manage the aftermath of the incident.
While the incident caused traffic disruptions and involved a chain-reaction crash, the officers involved were fortunate to avoid serious injury. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the incident.
