North Charleston, South Carolina – For the past century, North Charleston High School has served as a pillar of education, community, and history in the Lowcountry. October 8 is a noteworthy day for the North Charleston community.
For a century, North Charleston High School has been more than just a place to learn. Principal Henry Darby stated that this is also the 100th graduating class.
A gathering place for families, educators, and students who have helped form the North Charleston community.
Dr. Stephanie Ganaway-Paisley, a member of the North Charleston City Council and an educator, noted that the institution has had a historical and ongoing impact on the city. “This institution has produced so many outstanding leaders and successful company entrepreneurs. With the school located in the center of North Charleston.”
As Wednesday commemorates the 100th anniversary, Darby stated that North Charleston High School graduates are well-known for their successes in schools both locally and internationally.
According to Ganaway-Paisley, the students’ perseverance has been their foundation. “The kids remained in and contributed to the community. Many of the kids who stayed in the community, worked in the community, and became community leaders, elected politicians.”
To commemorate this milestone, events will take place each month throughout the year. The school is also in the process of establishing an archives room to house memorabilia and artifacts contributed or provided by alumni. Dated from the earliest graduating batches to the present.
Principal Darby indicated that they are working on going back as far as the 1950s.
“It will be a collection of sorts. And we want our grads to know that it will be a secure, lock and key camera. And you may either donate or give to the school.”
This year is about more than just reflecting on the past; it is about ensuring that the legacy continues.
“Our mission is more than just test scores. Our scores are in football, athletics, and academics. “The goal of North Charleston High School is to produce productive citizens, and we want you to produce productive citizens,” stated Principal Darby.
“My hopes and goals are that it continues to be here, under the great leadership that is under, and continue to turn out students, to be great leaders and community leaders in the city of North Charleston,” according to Ganaway-Paisley.
Tomorrow, leaders and community members will meet to commemorate the 100th anniversary, and hopefully the next 100.
