North Charleston council members discuss an alleged assault during an out-of-state trip

North Charleston, South Carolina. – North Charleston city authorities convened Tuesday night at City Hall for a council meeting, during which they discussed an alleged assault involving two council members.

Salt Lake City police are investigating after Councilman Michael Brown Jr., who represents District 7, was allegedly assaulted at the Lake Effect nightclub after midnight on Friday, November 21.

Brown Jr. said that when he filed the report with the Salt Lake City Police Department, an unnamed woman assaulted him in the groin and face, according to the department’s spokeswoman, Sgt. Gregory Wilkin.
Sgt. Wilkin claimed that he did not identify the lady who allegedly assaulted him. However, that woman filed a report about the incident, claiming she was also attacked.

Brown Jr., along with fellow council members Rhonda Jerome and Nefertiti Brown, were in town for the National League of Cities (NLC) City Summit, which took place from November 20 to November 22, according to a City of North Charleston official.

Brown Jr. and Nefertiti Brown discussed the problem during the North Charleston City Council meeting on Tuesday night.

Brown Jr. stated that he was at the Lake Effect for an NLC private session to submit an idea for next year’s conference on religion, spirituality, and politics. Following the pitch, he said he was assaulted and that a spirit attacked him.

“I hesitated with reporting this issue because I was abused by someone I considered a friend, but one thing I’ve learned this year is that the mission of God is far more essential than protecting your friends. “If you truly love them, you must expose the things that are hurting them before they hurt you,” Brown Jr. stated.

He also stated that he considered the person who insulted him lacked the ability to represent their constituents in a healthy way.

Nefertiti Brown, who represents District 6, answered after Brown Jr. ended his presentation, adding that she did not attend the meeting to criticize anyone personally. Nonetheless, she filed a report with Salt Lake City police and the NLC, alleging that she was assaulted during the event.

“It is an attempt of a public crucifixion, so I do want to say I apologize to the citizens of District 6, I apologize to the citizens of North Charleston as my conduct during this Salt Lake City event, even though I was able to gain so much, unfortunately a negative light has come upon me in regards to the situation and I apologize to you all that I wasn’t able to be more discerning of who I allowed in my space,” according to her.

Nefertiti Brown told the meeting that she suffered fingernail cuts on her hands as a result of Brown Jr.’s alleged abuse.

After Nefertiti Brown concluded, Brown Jr. answered, stating that he did not include his name in the reports because he did not “want to be a part of the agenda of tearing down black politicians.”

All city council members then proceeded into an executive session, during which no action was taken, and the meeting was adjourned. A city representative stated that officials do not intend to address the reported incident further at this time.

Both council members declined to seek charges in connection with the incident, and the Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating it as a simple assault, according to Sgt. Wilkin.
