Hundreds of Lowcountry pets now have new families after a two-day adoption blitz that was part of the annual Clear the Shelters initiative.

Successful Weekend of Adoptions

The event, held Saturday and Sunday, brought together News 2 and several tri-county animal shelters with the shared goal of finding forever homes for every dog, cat, and small animal waiting in shelters.

Shelter officials reported:

187 pets adopted from the Charleston Animal Society’s main and Berkeley campuses
18 adoptions from Pet Helpers

11 adoptions from Dorchester Paws

That brings the total to nearly 300 animals placed in homes over the weekend.

Part of a Bigger Effort

The adoption push was part of the month-long Clear the Shelters initiative, a nationwide campaign aimed at reducing overcrowding in shelters and giving animals a better chance at adoption.

Local shelter leaders say events like this are vital, especially during the summer months when shelters often see an increase in intake.

How You Can Still Help

Even though the two-day blitz is over, there’s still time to get involved:

Adopt a pet still waiting for a home

Foster an animal short-term to help free up shelter space

Donate supplies or funds to support local shelters
