Raleigh, North Carolina — Logan Federico, a 22-year-old North Carolina native, was shot and killed by someone with a lengthy criminal record, according to authorities, and her father is still advocating for different laws.
“I am Logan Hailey’s father,” Stephen Federico explained. It’s a badge of honour for him.
“Logan had the spirit that this country required. “We lost someone special who wanted to make a difference in the lives of younger children,” he said.
The North Carolina father is campaigning for change after his daughter was murdered in South Carolina in May. Alexander Dickey, the accused killer, has a lengthy criminal record, including 25 felony counts. Federico wants politicians to take quick action to get people like Dickey off the streets.
“There’s nobody that could stand in front of me and logically tell me why he was on the streets, there is no argument to Logan’s execution,” Federico went on.
If the conversation seems similar, it is, particularly in the Charlotte community, nearly two months after Iryna Zarutska was stabbed to death on a light rail train.
Federico spoke about his daughter during a House Judiciary Committee meeting in Charlotte this week, urging lawmakers to protect victims. He got diverted briefly when Congresswoman Deborah Ross mistook a photo of his daughter for Zarutska.
“I had something planned for that day, but her fury and mistaking Logan for Iryna overshadowed it…” My voice was then rendered null and useless; I needed to speak from the heart,” Federico explained. [Ross] couldn’t tell the difference between Logan Federico and Iryna, which I thought was quite terrible.”
Federico claims that a movement has begun to ensure that other parents do not go through what he did—and continues to do.
“My daughter is dead,” he said. “That’s why it’s important, and I have to try to keep, we, as a team, as a society, have to keep Logans and Irynas from happening.”
Federico wants to see a statute named after his daughter, one that will prevent others from becoming victims.
A spokesman for Congresswoman Ross told CBS 17 that they mistook the two victims. It reads:
“Congresswoman Ross made an error at the hearing and profusely apologized to Mr. Federico at the time. She is heartbroken that he lost his daughter to a senseless crime, and she sincerely apologizes if her error contributed to his suffering. She is dedicated to properly supporting federal law enforcement resources, including the Crime Victims Fund, to guarantee that no other parent suffers the same tragedy, in contrast to Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans, who are slashing funding for local crime prevention efforts.”
