Charleston County, South Carolina – The culprit in a shooting on the Isle of Palms in 2023 that injured several persons has pleaded guilty to multiple offenses.
On Thursday, Davion Singleton pleaded guilty to two counts of high and aggravated assault and battery, as well as one count of possessing a firearm while committing a violent felony.
The shooting occurred on senior skip day, April 7, 2023. According to police, numerous youths gathered on the beach when a brawl broke out, resulting in multiple rounds fired. Five persons were injured as a result.
“We want to make sure the victims get justice,” Isle of Palms police chief Kevin Cornett stated. “We were looking for closure today, to obtain a final answer to the defendant’s guilty plea. We understand, and I appreciate the judge’s desire to evaluate all of the circumstances and ensure that justice is delivered in the best way possible.”
Prosecutors are seeking a maximum term of 45 years, claiming that the gunshot caused irreparable stress and injury to the victims.
Singleton’s lawyer says they are prepared to take the consequences, but he wants less prison time. He claims Singleton was protecting himself in the moment and had no intention of injuring bystanders.
Singleton has been in jail since August 11, 2023. The judge in this instance is taking his time deciding on the official sentence.
