In Charleston County, Katie's Krops is increasing monthly meals due to record demand.

Katie’s Krops, a Charleston County nonprofit founded by Katie Stagliano, has experienced record demand amid rising food insecurity in the Lowcountry. The organization grows fresh produce through youth-led community gardens and distributes it via monthly dinners, library partnerships, and events like a December distribution of nearly 900 meals.

Recent Initiatives

A new grant funds two additional Lowcountry gardens, each equipped with 10 beds, soil, irrigation, plants, and seeds to expand access in food deserts. Collaborations with Charleston County libraries address transportation barriers for residents far from grocery stores.

Impact and Growth

The network supports gardens nationwide, with the flagship site in Summerville serving as an outdoor classroom for youth education on gardening and stewardship. Past challenges like COVID prompted streamlined efforts to prioritize those in greatest need.
