North Charleston police responded to an incident on the Don Holt Bridge early Thursday, shutting down I-526 in both directions around 3:30 a.m. The closure caused significant traffic delays, with drivers advised to seek alternate routes.
Incident Resolution
The bridge reopened after approximately nine hours following a peaceful resolution involving a person in mental health crisis. Police intervened safely after the individual parked on the bridge and sat on its exterior, with assistance from first responders and a civilian professional.
Traffic Impact
Eastbound traffic was blocked at Virginia Avenue and westbound at Clements Ferry Road, leading to backups like 107 minutes from Mount Pleasant to West Ashley. Authorities thanked the public for patience during the holiday season and promoted the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
