Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. A portion of the Shem Creek boardwalk is temporarily blocked as Mount Pleasant workmen analyze and repair the damage caused by this week’s high tides.
People are being requested to avoid the ramp connecting the boardwalk to the pedestrian bridge spanning Shem Creek until repairs are completed for safety reasons.
“The Town of Mount Pleasant Public Services Department will conduct a thorough assessment of the damage and take the necessary steps to complete repairs as soon as possible,” a letter dated Oct. 10 read.
The Charleston Harbor reached significant flood threshold on Friday morning, with a high tide of 8.46 feet, according to early National Weather Service data. That would be the 13th-highest tide level on record, tied with the 7th-highest non-tropical tide.
There was no timetable for when the ramp was scheduled to reopen.
The Shem Creek promenade remains accessible, and local restaurants and businesses are open as usual.
