Berkeley County, South Carolina. — Google announced on Monday that it will invest an additional $9 billion in South Carolina by 2027 to support its cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The investment will support the growth of the tech giant’s Berkeley County facility, as well as the ongoing building of the company’s two new data center facilities in Dorchester County.
Officials added that once completed, the Lowcountry facilities will help improve the cloud’s South Carolina area, which is part of a global network of 42 cloud regions that provide reliable, low-latency services to Google users and Google Cloud customers worldwide.
“Google’s investment in South Carolina deepens our 15-year roots here and helps to power America’s next wave of innovation,” said Ruth Porat, Alphabet and Google’s President and Chief Investment Officer. “By expanding our data center, investing in energy affordability, and supporting local workforce development, we are solidifying the Palmetto State’s role as a critical hub for the digital economy and creating opportunities for communities in South Carolina and across the country.”
The business also announced that it will give a Google.org grant to the Electrical Training Alliance (etA), a project that incorporates AI capabilities into training courses to help apprentices prepare for careers in technology and energy sectors.
According to officials, existing electrical workers and more than 160 apprentices will be taught in the state by 2030, bringing the estimated electrician pipeline up to about 150%.
“Google’s continued investment in South Carolina strengthens our position as a national leader in technology and innovation,” said the governor, Henry McMaster. “Our longstanding partnership with Google has created countless opportunities for our people, and will continue to open new doors for growth and success.”
Google is expected to create $6.4 billion in economic activity in South Carolina by 2024, and it has invested more than $4.5 billion in statewide data center operations since the Berkeley County site opened in 2007.
