The Charleston Water System is inviting local residents to participate in their free Citizens Academy starting this September. The program will offer multiple sessions, providing participants with a behind-the-scenes look at the daily operations that keep the city’s water flowing smoothly.
An Inside Look at the Water Utility’s Operations
Matthew Kenwright of the Charleston Water System spoke on Good Morning Charleston about the importance of the academy, noting that many residents don’t fully understand how water utility companies operate, even though they provide essential services. “Before I joined the utility, I never thought about where my drinking water comes from or where the wastewater goes,” Kenwright said, highlighting how much people take these services for granted.
Participants of the academy will have the opportunity to tour the water treatment plant and learn about the complex systems that ensure safe water distribution and wastewater management. Kenwright emphasized that the most impressive part of the experience for attendees is the sheer scale of operations. “Millions of gallons of water and wastewater are treated every day. People handle these issues every single day, and most people have no idea,” he explained.
How to Participate
The Citizens Academy is open to residents who are interested in learning more about the inner workings of the Charleston Water System. Sessions will take place every Tuesday at 4 p.m. from September 9 to October 7. Interested individuals can apply through the Charleston Water System’s website, with applications closing on August 20.
