Folly Road safety changes are planned to Bowens Island Road

A road safety project for Folly Beach is entering its permitting phase, aiming to improve the intersections at Bowens Island and Peas Island Roads. The current two-lane traffic merge into one after passing these intersections will be modified to create a safer flow of traffic. The plan includes moving the merge point to Sol Legare Road and adding a middle lane that will become a designated left-turn lane for each side road.

On Tuesday, the town authorized $62,000 for the firm that conducted the traffic study to begin the permitting process for these changes.

Enhancing Traffic Safety

Public Works Director Eric Lutz explained that the idea for the project came from public requests over the last five years, especially as the population on both sides of Folly Road has grown. The new plan will create a dedicated and safer space for cars waiting to make left turns, reducing the traffic vehicles need to cross when entering Folly Road.

“This gives you a safe zone,” Lutz said, emphasizing the importance of the turn lane in reducing risks for residents trying to enter neighborhoods.

The project will primarily involve re-striping and resurfacing the road without expanding the existing roadway.

Focus on Safety

Charleston County Councilwoman Jenny Honeycutt, who represents the Sea Islands District, highlighted that safety remains the primary concern for road improvements. “Our number one priority with any improvements to roadways is making them safer,” Honeycutt said. The project seeks to balance safety with minimal impact on traffic flow, acknowledging that while there may be some delays during construction, the goal is to improve the overall safety of the area.

Impact and Future Developments

The new merge point will be moved further up Folly Road, near the Harris Teeter, right after the Sol Legare Road stoplight. This change aims to reduce congestion while making the intersection safer for drivers and pedestrians.

Lutz also mentioned that this project is just one part of a larger effort to improve safety in the area. The town has applied for a grant to redesign Arctic Avenue, and future improvements will address pedestrian and bike safety along Folly Road.

Honeycutt added that bike lanes along Folly Road will remain a part of the changes, and new plans will be introduced for improvements between Ellis Creek and Walmart. These adjustments are part of ongoing efforts by the county and state to enhance the road infrastructure for all users.

Next Steps

The permitting process will take several months, and construction work will begin once approvals are secured. Local officials are optimistic that these changes will contribute to safer and more efficient traffic flow as the area continues to grow.
