North Charleston police arrested 29-year-old Janaina Ferreira after eight children were found unsupervised in her apartment during a fire at Arbor Square Apartments.

Incident Details

Emergency crews responded around 2:30 p.m. Thursday to the fire, where firefighters extinguished the blaze with no injuries reported. Ferreira returned shortly after with more children; investigators confirmed she was running an illegal daycare. Authorities notified parents and the South Carolina Department of Social Services.

Charges and Status

She faces eight counts of unlawful conduct toward a child, each carrying up to 10 years in prison, and is held at Al Cannon Detention Center on $200,000 bond. No charges were filed specifically for the unlicensed daycare, which can bring up to six months jail and $1,500 fine. The North Charleston Police and Fire Departments continue investigating.
