Dorchester County is gathering public input on early designs to enhance safety, traffic flow, and bike/pedestrian access along U.S. Highway 17-A (Main Street) in Summerville.
Project Scope
Funded through the 2022 transportation sales tax and aligned with Summerville’s resiliency plans, the initiative targets the corridor between Carolina Avenue and Luke Avenue. Proposed features include a 10-foot shared-use path on the eastern side and a five-foot sidewalk on the western side for better connectivity. Dorchester County Public Works transportation manager Mackenzie Kelly emphasized these aim to address crashes and congestion on this busy route.
Public Feedback
A drop-in meeting occurred January 13, 2026, sparking concerns from residents like Tommy Feagin about prioritizing traffic choke points elsewhere—such as Oakbrook, Dorchester Road, Orangeburg Loop, Cedar Street, Miles Jamison Road, and Central Avenue—amid 20,000+ approved new homes straining roads. A 30-day comment period runs through February 13 via online materials.
Timeline
Designs advance over the next few years, with construction eyed for 2028 and completion around 2031. This reflects Lowcountry growth pressures you’ve tracked in local infrastructure and quality-of-life issues.
