The ninth annual Rock the Block fundraiser brought the smell of barbecue and a spirit of generosity to downtown Charleston near Williman Street on Saturday. Hosted by Home Team BBQ, the event gathered chefs and vendors from across the region to serve specialty dishes while raising money for children’s charities. Organizers said the event has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years, with the Charleston-based restaurant reporting $650,000 raised for children in need through the fundraiser.

Chefs Unite for a Cause

Among the featured participants was Vandy Walker of Maison French Bistro, who put a French twist on an American classic by serving a patty melt made with French country pâté instead of ground beef.

Justin Fox of Fox Brothers Bar-B-Q traveled from Atlanta and teamed up with Stein Barbecue to serve a smoked pork carnitas taco finished with citrus and cola. Fox noted that proceeds also benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities, and emphasized the fundraiser’s long-term impact, saying the event has helped raise millions over time.

Community Spirit and Giving Back

Around the corner, Patty Floersheimer of Goat Sheep and Cow highlighted how food can bring people together, especially in divided times. She stressed the importance of supporting causes like childhood cancer research within the community. For many returning participants like Fox, the mission keeps them coming back year after year, reinforcing Rock the Block’s reputation as both a culinary celebration and a powerful force for good in Charleston.
