Charleston County performs ceremony for Edisto Island EMS facility, calling it a "milestone."

Charleston County opened a state-of-the-art EMS station on Edisto Island on March 27, 2026, named the Anna B. Johnson Building after a longtime public servant who championed the project.

Facility Highlights

The $5.6 million, over 5,000 sq ft structure houses up to four ambulances indoors, four sleeping quarters for 24/7 staff, and serves as a substation for the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office. Located at 2763 Highway 174, it replaces a cramped 1970s wooden home where gear stayed outside.

Response Time Impact

EMS Chief Chris Way noted cuts from 30 minutes (traveling from mainland) to minutes, as island-based paramedics handle local calls without bridge delays. Councilmember Jenna Honeycutt emphasized “seconds matter in emergencies.”

Honoree Legacy

Former Councilmember Anna B. Johnson, from humble James Island farming roots, fought for Edisto’s overlooked infrastructure. “Public safety is on Edisto Island” now, she said at the unveiling attended by residents, leaders, and her church community.
