Charleston County School District reports over 400 students and families facing homelessness, prompting a North Charleston grocery pick-up drive at Unity Missionary Baptist Church to provide holiday aid and raise awareness. The Tuesday event distributed hams, turkeys, sweet potatoes, clothes, and toys to those in need, highlighting how instability impacts student success.

Key Participants

Organizers included CCSD Board Member Kevin Hollinshead, Senator Deon Tedder, Greg Perry, Ronald Smith of Positive Vibes, Patsy Gardner of Second Chance, Lamar Mowatt of the Humanities Foundation, and Rev. Dr. Clifford Brown. Hollinshead noted 142 affected families in his District 4, stressing connections to education.

Support Efforts

CCSD offers free school meals, but winter breaks strain access; partners like Second Chance provide free transitional housing, food, clothing, and essentials. Leaders advocate for more state funding and year-round services, aligning with your Lowcountry interests in community programs and homelessness initiatives.
