At the Summerville Fireworks and Freedom Festival, thousands of people celebrate

The Summerville Fireworks and Freedom Festival returned this Independence Day, bringing thousands together for an evening filled with fun, food, and fireworks. With activities for all ages, the festival was a perfect way to celebrate America’s birthday in Summerville.

A Family-Friendly Celebration

From the moment the festivities kicked off at 5 p.m., the park was buzzing with energy. There were bouncy castles for kids, an open field for play, and food trucks offering everything from shaved ice to boiled peanuts. Summerville Parks and Recreation Events and Marketing Manager Rigel Kocur, who helps organize the event, shared that it’s one of the biggest celebrations of the year for the town.

“My favorite part is the community, the sense of neighborhood and camaraderie that we all have,” Kocur said. “I love being out here. I love seeing kids playing out on the fields. I love seeing the adults sitting back and enjoying the show.”

A Newcomer’s Perspective

Daryne Wall, a first-time attendee at the festival, was excited about the event, especially the fireworks show. His daughter, who worked the event, recommended the festival for its exceptional fireworks display. “Everybody loves fireworks,” Wall said. “I don’t care how old you are, so anywhere from five to, you know, 95, you’re going to love fireworks. And our daughter says they’re the best around, and we got to come see them here because they’re the best.”

A Perfect End to the Night

The evening came to a grand finale with a 30-minute fireworks display that lit up the night sky. The fireworks show was the highlight of the event, drawing cheers and applause from the crowd. The event, which ended around 9:30 p.m., was completely free, with the only requirement being a smile upon entry, according to Kocur.

The Summerville Fireworks and Freedom Festival was a true celebration of community, patriotism, and family fun. From the lively activities for children to the unforgettable fireworks show, the event captured the spirit of Independence Day. It’s clear why this festival is one of the most beloved traditions in Summerville.
