Charleston County School District (CCSD) announced the “Peninsula Promise” initiative on January 29, 2026, to enhance academic, social, and creative opportunities for peninsula students after two years of planning.

School Reassignments

Julian Mitchell Elementary on Perry Street, open since 1909 but facing enrollment declines, will close for elementary use; its ~150 students will move to Charleston Progressive Academy, Sanders-Clyde, or Memminger Elementary.

Campus Repurposing

The Mitchell site will house Simmons-Pinckney Middle School, gaining upgrades for career-technical programs and arts via the Linard McCloud Cultural Arts Collective.

Broader Initiatives

Changes include universal pre-K at Charleston Progressive Academy, family resource centers, Burke High partnerships with the American College of the Building Arts and College of Charleston, with implementation set for August 2026; no staff cuts planned.
