The intersection of Fort Johnson Road and Secessionville Road in Charleston County will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic starting Sunday evening, April 5, 2026, through Saturday evening, April 11, 2026.
The closure is part of ongoing utility relocation work as part of the traffic and safety improvement project funded by the 2016 Transportation Sales Tax referendum.
Purpose of the Closure
The road closure is necessary for utility relocation work, which includes:
- Relocating existing Charleston Water System water mains
- Installing new storm drainage crossings
This work requires access within the roadway and is expected to improve traffic flow and safety for both motorists and pedestrians. To minimize disruption, the closure is scheduled during spring break when schools are out of session.
Detour and Traffic Management
To ensure smooth travel, a detour plan has been set up:
- Red-marked roads will be closed to through traffic, but access to local residences and businesses will be maintained.
- Blue-marked roads will remain open, though they are not part of the official detour routes.
- Green-marked roads will serve as primary detour routes, with additional secondary detour routes available as needed.
Travelers near the construction zone are advised to use caution, follow posted traffic control devices, observe reduced speed limits, and adhere to message board guidance.
Ongoing Construction and Timeline
The construction project, which is part of Charleston County’s broader initiative to improve traffic flow and safety, is expected to continue through June 2027. The work during the April closure is a crucial step toward these long-term improvements.
