SUMMERVILLE, S.C. — The Summerville Police Department is set to launch a groundbreaking drone first responder program, becoming the first law enforcement agency in South Carolina to implement this innovative technology. After three years of development, the program will change the way 911 calls are responded to, providing real-time aerial support to first responders.

How the Drone Program Works

The drone program, initiated by Police Chief Doug Wright, is designed to help first responders reach the scene of an emergency more quickly and efficiently. Once a 911 call is received, dispatchers will evaluate whether a drone is needed based on the nature of the call. If deployed, the drone will automatically fly from its docking station to the scene, bypassing traffic and other obstacles, providing crucial real-time information to police and fire crews within minutes.

The drone’s ability to give a live view of a situation will enable first responders to make more informed decisions before they arrive at the scene. Fire crews can better assess how many units are needed, and law enforcement can gather intelligence about potential suspects or hazards.

Advancing Law Enforcement with Technology

The drone program is part of Summerville’s broader commitment to innovation in public safety. Coordinator Andre Lafon emphasizes that the drones are not just “flying toys,” but highly advanced machines with cameras that significantly enhance the department’s capabilities. The drones can be controlled remotely, allowing officers to operate them from various locations, including their homes.

The technology has already proven valuable, having been used in a recent train derailment to quickly assess potential chemical leaks. Wright hopes the program will serve as a model for other agencies, fostering collaboration and shared resources to improve regional public safety.
