A Moncks Corner woman has been accused of stealing a license plate from a patrol vehicle.

Deputies with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 44-year-old woman after allegedly discovering she was driving with a stolen license plate.

Luwanda Evelyn Dargan is charged with operating an uninsured vehicle (second offense), driving under suspension (second offense), and receiving stolen goods.

Stolen Plate Reported in Cane Bay

According to sheriff’s spokesperson Carli Carr, deputies responded Tuesday to a home in Cane Bay after a report of a stolen license plate. The victim told deputies that her unmarked patrol vehicle for the Charleston Aviation Authority was missing its license plate.

The victim provided a timeframe for when the theft occurred, and the plate was entered into the National Crime Information Center database as stolen.

Traffic Stop Leads to Arrest

Later that day, deputies spotted the stolen plate on a vehicle near Old Highway 52 and Highway 52 in Moncks Corner. After saturating the area, deputies located the vehicle at the intersection of Highway 6 and U.S. Highway 17 and conducted a felony traffic stop.

Authorities said Dargan admitted she placed the stolen plate on her vehicle knowing it did not belong to her. She was taken into custody and booked at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center.

The investigation remains ongoing.
