A man was sentenced to prison for the 2021 shooting death of a Charleston Southern athlete.

Charleston, South Carolina – A guy has learned how long he will serve in jail for his role in the 2021 shooting that killed a freshman Charleston Southern University football player.

Andre Bernard Moore Jr., 28, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter after initially facing accusations of murder, attempted murder, and possession of a firearm while conducting a violent crime. He was sentenced to eight years in jail and given credit for 1191 days served. According to court documents, he now has approximately four years and eight months remaining on his sentence, which began on Wednesday.

Moore was charged in connection with the death of Lorvens Florestal Jr., a 19-year-old Charleston Southern player from Delray Beach, Florida.

Florestal died of a gunshot wound around 3 a.m. on August 29, 2021, at the scene of a West Ashley shooting in the 500 block of Risher Street. The same incident resulted in two other non-life-threatening injuries.

Dr. Dondi Costin, the university’s then-president, issued a statement at the time of the shooting expressing his condolences for the death of a young student. “No one should ever have to go through this horrible tragedy. “The fact that Lorvens’ life was taken so suddenly and senselessly adds to our grief,” Costin said.

According to court documents, Moore will be required to pay an unknown fee or cost to the Charleston County Clerk of Court within 180 days of being released from prison.
