Larry Brown, a 79-year-old Columbia, South Carolina, grandfather, faces attempted murder and weapons charges after allegedly shooting his grandson in the hip during a Tuesday noon argument at his home.
Incident Recap
Richland County deputies found the grandson wounded; he underwent surgery but was released from the hospital. Brown was caught fleeing nearby. Defense attorney Dick Harpootlian argued at Wednesday’s bond hearing it was a “he said, she said” case—claiming Brown aimed at an aggressive dog owned by his son (on the property), missing and hitting the grandson instead.
Defense Claims
Harpootlian noted Brown had housed and employed the grandson post-prison, citing the elder’s wheelchair/cane use and possible mental issues from a 2021 car crash needing evaluation. Victim can’t return to the property. Judge granted bond with no-weapons and mental health eval conditions; next court in May.
