The last Red Lobster in Charleston proper has truly vanished—with the former West Ashley restaurant on Sam Rittenberg Boulevard demolished and the site now earmarked for a new Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) emergency department.
From Seafood to ER
- The building, long a familiar Red Lobster spot near I‑526, sat vacant after the chain closed its West Ashley location in 2023.
- Instead of another bank or car‑related business, city records show the two‑acre lot is being redeveloped into a free‑standing MUSC emergency department: about 12,700 square feet with 14 exam rooms, plus CT and radiography services.
- The land was bought in October 2024 for $3.75 million by Legacy Parent Inc., a Texas‑based company tied to Intuitive Health, which focuses on emergency‑care facilities.
Red Lobster’s Decline
- Red Lobster built a national reputation in casual dining—famous for Cheddar Bay Biscuits and “endless” shrimp—but has shrunk hard in recent years.
- It closed at least 99 locations in May 2024 and then filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, weighed down by about $1 billion in debt, high labor costs, and lease obligations from sale‑leaseback deals that pushed annual rent to roughly $200 million.
So the bulldozing of that last Red Lobster symbolizes both the end of an era for Charleston and the start of a new medical facility in the area.
