The Charleston County Sheriff's Office is holding a free trailer stamping event.

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office Trailer Identification Program offers free events to stamp unique owner-applied numbers on trailers, aiding in the recovery of stolen ones. These events address a key vulnerability in South Carolina, where trailers do not require license plates, making identification challenging after VINs are removed by thieves. The program has proven effective, with detectives noting successful recoveries due to the permanent stamps.

Event Details

The most recent event occurred on Saturday at the agency’s Law Enforcement Center in North Charleston. No advance paperwork is needed, and it’s open to residents from any area—just bring your trailer. Events typically attract 50 to 60 participants and occur quarterly.

Program Benefits

Stamped numbers are entered into the sheriff’s records alongside VINs and serial numbers for quick law enforcement access. Detectives like Michael Thompson and Cosimo Zappoli emphasize that this deters resale by thieves and adds security beyond standard VINs. Recoveries have included trailers, ATVs, and equipment stolen years prior.

Upcoming Schedule

The next event is set for May, with updates posted on the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page. For details, contact Detective Thompson at 843-554-2471.
