Summerville couple charged with causing serious physical harm on a one-year-old child

Dorchester County, South Carolina – Two adults are in arrest and face criminal charges for allegedly abandoning their one-year-old in serious condition in an act of “depravity and unconscionable cruelty,” according to Dorchester County Sheriff Sam Richardson.

36-year-old Christopher Leon Grimes and 29-year-old Brittany Marie Hatcher have been charged with one count of unlawful conduct toward a child and two counts of inflicting great bodily injury on a child after deputies were dispatched to Summerville Medical Center in response to a child who was reported to be motionless and exhibiting severe physical injuries.

According to DCSO, when deputies arrived, medical staff informed them that the one-year-old was in critical condition, had “extensive” bruising on their body, and had suffered two brain bleeds. Investigators interrogated the child’s parents, Grimes and Hatcher, and the two were later detained in connection with the incident, according to DCSO.

The DCSO’s inquiry is ongoing. Grimes and Hatcher were booked into the LC Knight Detention Center.
