On Monday, December 8, 2025, Star Gospel Mission (SGM) in Charleston, S.C., held a groundbreaking ceremony for Phase 1 of its Brighter Together Campaign, focusing on new transitional housing units for women and children experiencing homelessness.
Project Scope
The initiative involves remodeling one home and constructing another to create at least 30 new beds, enabling up to 52 residents at a time in private family units for stays of two years or longer. Part of a $20 million effort backed by groups like Friends of Morning Light, it provides wrap-around support including case management to foster stability and independence.
Community Impact
Charleston County School District reported 621 homeless students at the end of the 2024/2025 school year, with many in unstable situations like cars or motels; the program aims to address this by meeting families’ unique needs. Construction is expected to take 15-18 months, emphasizing dignity and momentum toward life goals, as stated by SGM Executive Director Dr. Marion Platt.
