SLED is investigating an officer-involved shooting at North Charleston Walmart

An investigation is underway into an officer-involved shooting at a North Charleston Walmart on Monday evening.

At around 7 p.m., an off-duty North Charleston Police officer was working as security at the Walmart on Rivers Avenue when employees alerted them to a customer attempting a fraudulent return, according to a release.

Store employees requested that the customer be placed on a trespass notice and removed from the premises.

While the officer was speaking with the employees, the suspect attempted to flee the store. The officer then pursued the suspect, who fled through an emergency door.

During the chase, the suspect brandished a firearm at the officer. The officer then fired his gun, striking the suspect.

Officers administered medical aid, and the suspect was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials say the severity of their injuries is unknown.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was immediately notified and launched an on-site investigation.

The officer involved will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
