Kenyada Lucretia Smith, a 41-year-old Berkeley County woman, faces charges of forgery under $10,000 and filing a false insurance claim after allegedly submitting a fake rental car receipt to defraud Safeco Insurance.
Incident Summary
The scheme involved a Nov. 14, 2024, crash in Summerville where Smith’s vehicle—covered under a Safeco policy—was declared a total loss on Dec. 2, 2024, qualifying for rental reimbursement. On March 4, 2025, she submitted a $1,190.98 receipt from the unverifiable “Turquinex Rental,” later revealed as an altered Avis receipt from Feb. 26, 2024.
Investigation and Confession
SLED, at the request of the South Carolina Department of Insurance, uncovered the forgery; Safeco couldn’t verify the company. Smith admitted during a Feb. 10, 2026, recorded interview that she knew the document was fraudulent, leading to her booking at Hill-Finklea Detention Center for prosecution.
