A North Charleston man, Canaan Heyward, was arrested early Sunday for stealing neighborhood mail while bizarrely claiming to be the “royal mail ambassador.” Police found him tampering with mailboxes around 2 a.m. at Brossy Circle and Dorchester Road.
Incident Details
Officers responded after a resident reported the suspect’s activity over multiple nights, carrying plastic bags. They discovered about 80 pieces of mail and packages for 20 addresses, some dating back to March 27, plus opened items like credit cards and health insurance cards.
Evidence Found
Heyward had a screwdriver and hammer, linked to damaged, pried-open mailboxes nearby. Some mail appeared opened, raising concerns about identity theft.
Charges Filed
He faces safecracking, financial transaction card fraud, and possession of burglary tools from the North Charleston Police Department.
