A 75-year-old daycare employee in South Carolina has been arrested after allegedly assaulting a baby at a Christian preschool. Gladys Rampersant, who worked at Sweetgrass Christian Academy in North Charleston, was taken into custody on Thursday and charged with unlawful conduct toward a child in connection to the incident that occurred in July.
Details of the Alleged Attack
Rampersant is accused of abusing a baby, less than one year old, while caring for the infant at the daycare. According to authorities, she yanked the child up by the arms, shook them vigorously, and then “slammed” the child into a crib. The attack reportedly continued when Rampersant returned to the baby, pulled them out of the crib, and struck the child on the head multiple times.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Rampersant was arrested by the North Charleston Police Department’s Special Victims Unit and was initially jailed at the Al Cannon Detention Center on a $15,000 bond. She posted bond hours later and is scheduled to appear in court on October 31.
Daycare Closure and Public Response
In the wake of the arrest, Sweetgrass Christian Academy deactivated its social media pages, and a Google search now indicates that the daycare is permanently closed. The academy had only recently opened its doors, with a grand opening on July 26.
The disturbing nature of this incident raises serious concerns about the safety and well-being of children in daycare facilities, prompting reflection on the importance of vigilant care and oversight in early childhood education.
