Police: After a truck was discovered underwater close to the Sullivan's Island boat landing, charges may be brought

A man could face criminal charges after a tractor-trailer cab was found underwater near a Sullivan’s Island boat landing in South Carolina. Police confirmed the truck belonged to a Kentucky-based commercial trucking company, and it had been fully submerged in about 14 feet of water before being recovered.

Incident Began With Man Detained Near Fort Moultrie

The unusual series of events began Wednesday morning when Sullivan’s Island police officers found and detained a man near Fort Moultrie. He was taken to a local hospital for a medical evaluation. At that time, police didn’t know he was connected to a larger situation.

Trucking Company Reports Driver Missing

Later that night, police received a call from a commercial trucking company, saying one of their drivers was missing. Their GPS tracking software showed the truck’s last known location was near the Osceola Avenue boat landing on Sullivan’s Island.

Police checked the coordinates and believed the truck might be underwater.

Sonar Technology Confirms Truck Is Submerged

On Thursday morning, the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol Unit used sonar equipment to scan the water near the Sullivan’s Island Fire Department dock. Divers later found a fully submerged tractor-trailer cab sitting about 14 feet underwater.

The truck, identified as an International Sleeper Cab, was confirmed to belong to the missing Kentucky-based trucking company.

Truck Safely Recovered

With help from a heavy-duty wrecker service, the submerged vehicle was safely pulled from the water. No injuries or environmental hazards were reported during the recovery.

Driver Identified as Detained Man, Charges Pending

Police later confirmed that the man detained earlier near Fort Moultrie was the driver of the submerged truck. Authorities have not released his name yet, but they say criminal charges are pending, and his identity will be shared once formal warrants are issued.

What began as a strange detainment near Fort Moultrie ended in the discovery of a large truck underwater — and possibly serious legal trouble for the driver. Authorities are still investigating how and why the truck ended up submerged near Sullivan’s Island. For now, the driver remains unnamed as charges are prepared, and the trucking company is working with officials to understand what went wrong.
