Visitors will have a chance to step back in time this weekend as Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie mark a major milestone in American history with a special event.

Event Marks Civil War Anniversary

In recognition of the 165th anniversary of the opening shots of the American Civil War, officials are waiving admission fees on Saturday at both Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie.

The sites will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., offering guests the opportunity to explore the historic grounds and learn about the events that helped shape the nation.

Living History and Demonstrations

The event will feature a variety of programs designed to bring history to life.

Musket firing demonstrations are scheduled for 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m., while park rangers will lead presentations at 10 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m.

Interactive Experiences for Visitors

Historians dressed in period clothing will portray both soldiers and civilians from the era, giving visitors a more immersive experience.

Hands-on activities will also be available at “history row,” where guests can try historic games, create their own cartridge and sachet, and learn about clothing and daily life during the Civil War period.

Opportunity to Explore Local History

Officials say the event is designed to make history accessible and engaging for visitors of all ages while honoring the significance of the Civil War’s beginning.

The fee-free day provides a unique opportunity for the public to visit two of the most important historic sites in the Charleston area and gain a deeper understanding of the past.
