Charleston County, South Carolina – Two persons were killed Wednesday afternoon after a dark vehicle drove into the river along River Road, according to officials.
According to the St. John’s Fire District, units responded to the water along 779 River Road on Johns Island around 2:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a sunken vehicle.
Witnesses told first responders that they saw the car drive off the bridge and into the river. Crews successfully recovered the overturned truck.
The Charleston County Coroner’s Office is on the site and has yet to identify the dead.
River Road, between Main Road and Brownswood Road, is expected to remain closed for an extended amount of time as crews investigate the incident.
The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
