North Charleston traffic stop leads to gun and narcotics arrests

A North Charleston man is facing drug and weapon charges after a routine traffic stop turned into a tense encounter that ended with police discovering marijuana and a firearm in his car.

Traffic Stop Leads to Arrest in North Charleston

Police say Darryl Marcelus Brown, 64, of North Charleston, was arrested on Sunday around 4 p.m. after officers pulled him over near the Econo Lodge on Northside Drive. Officers were conducting proactive patrols in the area when they saw a vehicle leave the hotel and make an improper turn.

That traffic violation led to the stop — but the situation quickly escalated.

Erratic Behavior and Attempt to Drive Off

According to police:

Brown stepped out of his vehicle before officers approached, yelling and waving his driver’s license.

Officers ordered him back into the car, but instead, Brown drove away and got onto the I-26 eastbound onramp.

A second traffic stop was initiated, and officers described Brown’s actions as erratic.

At that point, Brown and his two passengers were detained without further incident.

Drugs and Firearm Found in Vehicle

A search of the car reportedly turned up:

60 grams of a green, plant-like substance that field-tested positive for THC.

A handgun, which Brown was not legally allowed to possess due to a prior felony conviction.

Charges and Bond

Brown now faces two charges:

Possession with intent to distribute marijuana

Unlawful possession of a firearm by someone convicted of certain crimes

He was booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center and later released after posting a $10,000 bond.

What began as a simple traffic violation has left Darryl Brown facing serious charges. The case highlights how routine police patrols can lead to larger investigations when illegal drugs and weapons are uncovered. The investigation remains ongoing.
