North Charleston, South Carolina – North Charleston Police Chief Ron Camacho provided details on Monday involving a teenager apprehended at a CVS last week, stating that the department’s officers did not break any policies during the incident.
Officers from the North Charleston Police Department responded to the CVS at 5215 Ashley Phosphate Road on Thursday afternoon, September 25.
A 911 caller said that a person was inside the store spewing profanities and allegedly threatening employees. The caller further stated that the guy may be equipped with a knife.
When responding cops arrived, they encountered a kid who matched the suspect description.
According to Chief Camacho, the child was uncooperative and fought police attempts to hold him. Officers were able to apprehend the subject, and he was not hurt throughout the incident, he said.
There were ‘growing tensions’ at the scene, so cops transported the juvenile to a different location, where he was eventually released to a parent on a custodial promise for charges of assault, third degree, and breach of peace.
The North Charleston Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards and Use of Force Training Unit discovered no policy violations in the officer’s actions during the event.
Authorities discovered no knife following an examination that included the study of security footage and body camera records.
Some reports claim the child was selling candies, but Chief Camacho says police have not been able to substantiate this.
“Please keep in mind that recording video of police interactions is permissible in order to enhance accountability and clarity. However, verbal confrontations and physical actions during such instances can exacerbate emotions and rarely help to de-escalate the situation,” he stated. “The North Charleston Police Department will continue to serve with integrity, protect our residents, and support the well-being of our community.”
